Following the simple “Ava’s Double D’s” #CivicDesign standard process, #PaintersHouse #Idyllwild created version one of this signage solution.
A sign designed and painted for a local #Salon artisan. How did we arrive to v1 of this solution? Camille had an existing chalkboard sandwich board she wants to use in front of the salon. The required verbiage included "Custom Hair Design by Camille" at "Idyllwild Day Spa" and "Walkins Welcome" Camille has a relationship with Idyllwild Day Spa, which uses a chalkboard look in their own materials. So we want those to relate. In addition, Camille had a piece of inspiration artwork a friend had made for her. It features a blissful woman with multi-color hair. As an expert colorist, Camille liked the idea of this painting. She also has a business card, shown in the Development phase images below, that I had to if not precisely color match, at least relate to in a relevant way.
I looked at other chalkboard styles around town to see how Camille's sign could relate to the established community signage system (are we used to looking at chalkboard sandwich boards? If so, in which contexts?) I took some pictures.
For our first meeting, I taped the various elements onto the boards and walked Camille through PaintersHouse to see completed paintings with various finishes. Initially, she thought she'd like to move away from the chalkboard look and make a fine oil painting on white like the Bride doors (below). Once we discussed the other chalkboard looks around town, she decided wholeheartedly to pursue the black ground. She preferred the homey look over a modern San serif.
I completed a few chalk/conte crayon drawings both for the 1st meeting and second review (by email) so Camille could get a feel for the layout options. Once we knew we were working with color over a dark surface, I introduced the idea of magnetizing the board and leaving a border around it, so the board might be utilized as a rental for someone else on days when Camille isn't working. This might help her offset production costs or even allow for the v1 solution to serve as an underpainting for a fancier oil painting like the Bride doors in the future.
Functional Specifications and Estimate
With the look decided, I was able to estimate time and materials for Camille. I am looking to design a product small businesses can afford, then relate other economic and funding sources to PaintersHouse (a nonprofit BeliefDNA project). As #PaintersHouse’ #ProjectConcierge designing civic prototypes, I actually put in significant time in addition to what I budget for my client-citizen, but, like many start-ups, that is in the hope that PaintersHouse can then repeat the size, ground and technique again in the future, promoting it as a community standard. In some ways our experience will be like visiting a Beauty School.

During production, I tested with a car/fridge magnet style & that option is now available to her (think, a Friday or Saturday night band promotion, since she works during the day, or an event weekend)
See the images at the top of this post and note possible alternatives generated during the #development phase. The issues we imagined may prove true or they may not. Camille will be placing the sign in different positions and in different lighting and weather conditions, so the placement itself will influence how the artwork is perceived.
Documenting the products used and selecting key paints and colors to archive so our client-citizen can call upon us again for revisions- whether those happen quickly after delivery (can we make this darker or lighter, more or less saturated) or for an annual retouch next year. As PaintersHouse, I’ll continue to seek rental clients for the board (magnets like this can be digitally produced or painted by hand) in order to pay for maintenance and improvements and to network on Camille’s behalf (event rental customers frequently need salon services).
With permission, I cleaned and lightly sanded the frame itself and gave the wood a light spray with the Varathane. I am interested in seeing how the UV protector impacts the signage’s weathering. I suggested for v2 that we might wood putty fill some of the rougher edges of the frame itself and give it another coat. We’ll see how things go! Camille was wonderful to collaborate with and I hope we get to design together again. May Camille be blessed by a steady stream of clients!

Local weekly values-based group gathering or face time with friends to educate and be educated about issues affecting the community or neighborhood. Relating “Act Local/Think Global” to larger regional/national/global civic arrangements and impacts. Checking in to a small group civic gathering like this could eventually become our citizen’s only meeting obligation for the week, replacing the staff meeting at work, scouting meeting after work, family/spouse meetings regarding experiences like meals, materials management, shuttling kids around, managing laundry and sporting equipment that can be better handled in technology-enabled community coordination, like a luxury resort or hospitality property. Generating and Combining the to-do lists generated by 50+/-people in a neighborhood or local affinity group to look for efficiencies. Can be branded experiences periodically changed up at home (#PodsProgramming updated with seasonal #Colorways), or attended while traveling elsewhere, as long as the civic group sends relevant data to citizen’s neighborhood for scheduling and materials management. My prototype program is called #Sanctuary on this site- governing ourselves according to what we truly value.
At least one activity block reserved for adult sexuality per week
Occasional- weekly or at least quarterly- PinupsPresidential variety show formatting for entertaining civic engagement- like a local SNL for civic issues and awareness. These gatherings can take place in theatrical, auditorium or sporting venues can vary in size. They can prompt venue restoration and or construction and feature both professional and citizen-generated content. #MemesThatMatter and Viral Vids can trend to regional, national and global PinupsPresidential arena shows. This could be weekly or at least quarterly.
A new Colorways each quarter for education, economic development and entertainment with Renewal #transition between seasons. With reset #practice NewYearRenewal, Spring Renewal, Summer and Fall, residential mimics retail weaving methods with regularly scheduled cleaning and ordering. Commercial work places may also adopt to align themselves with these practices.
Annual one week #WishingWell retreat for health consultation, returning home with program plan to local doctor. Activity and #ActivityStation updates (usually 3 per working day) moved to citizen’s BeliefDNA dashboard calendar.
Ava’s Double D’s (discovery, design, develop, deliver) every 4 years (currently coinciding with PinupsPresidential’s U.S. presidential calendar) to allow free flow time for innovation as well as an organizing framework for harvesting completed work. 2019 is our #Development year.
Individual citizens, groups or brands can create and share activities and #activitystations for civilization building goals: for example, formatting for groups of 4 to make Korean meals together using specific products, mother and child formatting for a series of kitchen chemistry experiments to meet child’s education requirements and mom’s teaching certification, guy time for neighborhood maintenance projects that combine fellowship with fitness and community service. Scouting, education and coaching resources deploying new and existing content for optimized human experiences as long as formatting adheres to #GovernanceStandards like 3 #activitystations per day. BeliefDNA citizen dashboard automatically generates a proposed weekly schedule of activities for citizen>family>community with appropriate privacy, advising of potential conflicts and possible solutions.
